Reduction of stomach may cause dental problems and alcoholism
in later years.
Some patients who underwent stomach surgery to reduce the present, after five years or more, a considerable new weight gain. Moreover, other disturbances are also being observed in the same period after the operation, including alcoholism, anorexia, bulimia, bruxism, excessive increase of dental caries and brittle.
The information is being collected and interpreted by a group of multidisciplinary study of the Clinic Hospital(CH), Faculty of Medicine, USP. The objective of the study, still in progress, is to demonstrate that only the surgery, which is made in the hospital for nine years, not just for the success of treatment used for the drastic reduction of the weight.
According to psychologists, a group of patients operated by the technical Fobi-Capella between five and nine years ago, 13% returned to a state of morbid obesity with a body mass index (BMI) over 40. The BMI is obtained dividing the weight of the person by height squared. In total, 64.15% again be obese with a BMI greater than 30.
After surgery, it is expected that the patient weight the desired quantity and then ten kilos weight again. But among the 53 patients studied, 58.5% gained more than ten kilos, 39.6% more than twenty kilograms and 13.2% fattened more than thirty pounds. Only 7.84% of the patients had ideal weight or emagreceram too (in cases of bulimia and anorexia).
“It is gross and results have not yet been made statistical studies. The data were not correlated with the organic matters and integrity of surgery. But it is nevertheless a warning to patients and doctors: the surgery should not be understood as a formula magic, “is said
According to the doctor and coordinator of the group, the study aims to show that the operation is not the end of treatment. “These patients may replace a compulsion for another. The secret to success is monitoring,” he explains.
For Marlene, the case of alcoholism, observed in 18% of those 53 patients studied, is one of the examples of the exchange of compulsion. People are beginning to enjoy the social benefits of weight loss - unlike the previous condition, in which they do not fell outside the home - passing thus to drink excessively.
